Will Apple eventually takeover Google?

“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”

Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Are you in need of a new flagship phone? How about a staycation at Marina Bay Sands Singapore to recharge your soul? You can have the answers to these questions at your fingertip by simply Googling them.

Majority of consumers nowadays utilize Google’s search engine for everything under the sun. In fact, Google is the major search engine with an astounding market share of nearly 90 percent!

Companies believe in Google

Companies all around the world have been paying Google for their services. One of the most subscribed services which businesses utilize is Paid Search Marketing. Advertisers of the businesses will only have to pay when consumers click on the ads shown on Google search, also known as Pay-Per-Click (PPC). These companies include internationally-renowned Fortune 100 corporations such as Amazon and Microsoft. These Fortune 100 corporations alone account for more than USD $3 billion spent on PPC.

Consumers believe in Google

Consumers such as us have a heavy reliance on Google search engine. The wide-ranging things we search for on a daily basis contribute to more than 3 billion searches on Google everyday. This phenomenon has led companies to spend on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google SEO allows companies to be listed in a certain order according to a range of criteria such as relevant words and phrases. Every company in the major industries vie to be the top listed option on Google search as it provides their business with high visibility. This will translate to higher potential revenue in the long run. On a global scale, companies have been spending beyond USD $75 billion every year on SEO services alone.

Everyone believes in Google

It is widely known that one of the key cornerstones of every business is their study of statistics. Based on statistics, more than half of the consumers who browse the internet make new online purchases on a weekly basis. Consumers of various demographics develop reliance on online purchases due to the ease of use. Companies develop reliance on SEO and PPC due to consumers’ high levels of engagement with online purchases.

Apple’s Pie in the Search Engine Industry

It is an established fact that Apple products’ default web browser is Safari. Have you ever noticed that when we ask Apple’s Siri to aid us in conducting an online search, the default search engine is Google? The reason is worth USD $9 billion. It has been reported that Google potentially paid USD $9 billion over the span of just 4 years so that they can remain as the default search engine on Safari.

The amount Google paid Apple is rather insignificant as Google ads alone have generated close to USD $150 billion in 2020. Apple might be planning to have a bigger portion of the pie because of the lucrative revenue. If Apple were to set up their own search engine, they will be providing multiple open doors such as acting as an ad platform for stakeholders such as webmasters and app developers to utilize for the promotion of their websites.

Unless someone can give Apple USD $150 billion worth of reasons to naysay on this option, I personally believe that Apple might be steering towards this direction. Apple might indeed be planning in the dark before striking Google hard and fast like a thunderbolt.

The search continues

Whether is it the Apple search engine, or the Google search engine, I believe that consumers of all ages will continue their search for happiness. After all, the happiness of finding that unbelievable staycation deal on search engines is irreplaceable.

  1. A wonderfully concise blogpost! The platforms apple alone can provide should they decide on expanding into search engines would be enough to boost the initial launch. Asides from apple, do you feel Samsung will have the same edge?

    1. Hi Xing Yin!

Thank you for your kind comments! I feel that Samsung does have a chance in creating a search engine with a huge userbase. However, it will only happen when there is a paradigm shift in Samsung’s consumers’ adoption rate. It will happen if Samsung is able to take innovation to the next level.

    1. Hi there!

Thank you for your kind comments! I personally believe that they will be a long period of plateau for both companies. Both companies have been outstanding in the own rights with huge userbases over the past decades. With that being said, I believe that a breakthrough for either of the companies will come when one of them takes innovation to the next level.

  3. Hello, Neo. Thank you very much for sharing this helpful information with us! I like how well-organized and concise your site is, as it has helped me better understand Google. Without a question, Google is fantastic. More clients are turning to Google because of its trustworthiness and long history. As a result, Google was able to seize the opportunity and launch a new business (PPC), which was a fantastic move. Taking it a step further has helped a number of firms expand their reach.
However, given Apple’s rapid growth, do you believe they will venture into paid advertising on iPhones in the future? What are your opinions on the matter?

    1. Hi there!

Thank you for your kind comments! Google’s management team is smart as they have consistently brought their firm to achieve greater heights. Apple has in fact already ventured into paid advertising within their App store! There are certain apps in the App store which are being promoted consistently on the App store home page. Certain apps also have high ranking positions when consumers search for specific applications such as “photo filter”.

  4. Great post Yi Wei! I feel that you picked an interesting topic to discuss. I’ve never noticed that Apple Siri’s default search engine is Google before this, an excellent observation from your side! Although Google is still the leading search engine for now, with HUAWEI being the first to ban Google on all of its devices but still having around 20 per cent of the global smartphone market share, I believe that it is possible for Apple to take over Google in the long future.

    1. Hi Yujia!

Thank you for your kind comments! The move for HUAWEI to ban Google is a rather interesting and debatable topic isn’t it? Some support the move while others are not that happy about it. I personally believe that it is very plausible for Apple to overtake Google at some point in time. They do have the capabilities to do so after all.

  5. Hi Yi Wei! Your post is very straightforward, and I like how your blog would answer our questions that we may not have the time to search for! You would also provide other sources for us to read on. Just two questions in my mind: In terms of web browsers, what do you think Microsoft Edge currently lacks? If you could give them 3 pieces of advice, what kind of advice would you give them?

    1. Hi there!

Thank you for your kind comments! I personally feel that Microsoft Edge lacks the general public’s preference. I would advice them to engage the public users, engage the big corporations, and constantly update their user interface. I believe that they will experience breakthroughs if they are able to effectively manage the 3 points which I have just mentioned. It will take them a long period of time with consistent efforts in order to match Google’s current standing.

  6. Hello !! This is a really good read 🙂 before reading this, I actually didn’t know that Apple had their own search engine ! But I think that Google will definitely stay ahead because they are solely focused on search engines whereas Apple has their attention on many other parts of the tech industry. Additionally, maybe you can also consider mentioning about the other search engines available such as Bing, and why they are not as preferred by the general population ! Thanks for making me realise that Apple has their own search engine as well 🙂 Nonetheless, thanks for the great blog post !
